Knee Pain Symptoms
Early detection is crucial for prompt intervention, helping to prevent complications and improve treatment outcomes. It is therefore important to recognise the signs and symptoms of knee pain, which may manifest as:
- Clicking or popping sounds
- Sharp and stabbing pain
- Feeling of instability
- Limited range of motion
- Swelling and inflammation
Knee Conditions We Treat
- ACL Injury: ACL injuries often happen during sports or sudden movements at work, causing the ligament to tear. A “popping” sound or sensation is a common sign.
- MCL Injury: MCL injuries involve damage to the ligament on the inner side of the knee, which helps stabilise the joint and prevent it from bending inward.
- Meniscus Injury: Meniscal injuries refer to tears or damage in the cartilage (meniscus) that cushions and stabilises the knee joint, often caused by trauma or twisting movements.
- Patellar Tendinitis: Patellar tendinitis is an overuse injury causing inflammation in the tendon connecting the kneecap to the shinbone, often seen in athletes who jump frequently.
- Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition where cartilage and surrounding tissues break down over time, commonly affecting weight-bearing joints like the knees and hips.
Common Causes of Knee Pain
- Sprains: These result from ligaments being stretched or torn. Sudden twisting or impacts can strain these ligaments, requiring medical attention.
- Strains: Strains caused by excessive force or repetitive movements like improper lifting or sudden motions, can weaken muscles or tendons and lead to knee pain.
- Overuse: Overuse occurs when repetitive stress without enough rest leads to wear and tear in the knee, similar to how household items wear out over time.
- Fractures: A sudden impact or significant force can result in a bone break, causing pain, swelling, and limited mobility. This is a serious concern requiring immediate medical attention to ensure proper healing and prevent further complications.
- Arthritis: A common cause of knee pain, osteoarthritis results from cartilage wear due to age or injury, while rheumatoid arthritis causes joint inflammation from an autoimmune response.
